IP Space Design:
Retail and Office

Project Overview
This project explores the design of an office building for Nintendo, combining functionality with the playful essence of its iconic IP. The first floor is dedicated to a retail area, while the second floor serves as an office space. Throughout the design, elements inspired by Nintendo's IP are seamlessly integrated, creating a vibrant and immersive environment. Client

Nintendo is a century-old Japanese company mainly engaged inthe development, manufacture and distribution of video games. Nintendo's corporate culture is built around a passion for gaming and a commitment to quality, innovation, and fun. This culture has helped Nintendo create some of the most beloved video game franchises in history, such as Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon.

This project aims to craft an immersive Nintendo game world by designing a space that seamlessly integrates a creative office environment and a vibrant store. The goal is to inspire employees to maintain their creativity while providing visitors with an engaging experience that brings the Nintendo brand and its products to life.

Project Goals

• Encourage people to interact.
• Encourage the experience of somatosensory games and complete some daily excercise.
• Let the open office space become the main space to strengthen employee communication.
• Highly relevant to the theme.
• The spacious space allows everyone to move freely without feeling uncomfortable due to the narrow space.

Nintendo's extensive catalog of games features an abundance of iconic elements, among which mushroom and pipe appear most frequently. These elements are instantly recognizable and strongly associated with the Nintendo brand. Drawing on this observation, the design deconstructs these two motifs to create a reimagined "Mushroom Kingdom."

Adjacency Matrix

The space is divided into key functional areas, including a retail zone, an exhibition area, and a gaming experience zone. Since the target audience is children, who are typically accompanied by their parents, a dedicated rest area with a water station is also included for parents. A staircase connects the first and second floors, ensuring seamless access between the two levels.

Brand Merchandise Zone

The curved shape of the ceiling aligns perfectly with the design concept and enhances the visual focus of the central area.

Iconic Elements: "?" Block, Pipe

Break Area

This semi-circular space features a ceiling design inspired by the mycelium beneath a mushroom cap, aligning seamlessly with the design concept. In addition to tables and chairs, the space includes water stations, encouraging visitors to spend extended time in the retail center.

Gaming Lounge

The yellow pipes dividing the different game rooms are designed by combining the shapes of mushrooms and pipes, reflecting the integrated concept.

Reception Area

This project is in an office building, so the second-floor office area can be accessed via the central staircase on the first floor or through the public elevator lobby.

If visitors enter from the elevator lobby, they will be greeted by this reception area.

Iconic Elements: Shy Guy

Stair

This staircase is located at the center of the entire space. In the Mario series, transparent pipes allow characters to travel quickly and weightlessly between points. Inspired by this concept, I incorporated the transparent pipe design into the staircase to symbolize the seamless movement of employees between floors.

Iconic Elements: Piranha Plants, Pipe

Library & Co-Working

The irregularly arranged circular lights on the ceiling are inspired by the dots on a mushroom cap. This is a fully open space, and the use of a unified color scheme helps psychologically segment the area.
